DIY: Sugar Scrub

Sugar body scrubs are a non-toxic, eco-friendly way to polish your skin to a healthy new glow! Learn how to make your very own homemade body scrub with just a few ingredients.

Sugar scrubs are great for exfoliating your skin because they remove dead skin cells, lift away dirt/oil and can help stimulate circulation. Sugar is a humectant (retains or preserves moisture) so it will not strip your skin of its natural oils. Additionally, glycolic acid occurs naturally in sugar and is responsible for cleansing the skin as well as dissolving dead skin cells.

There are many types of sugar that you can use for sugar body scrubs:

  1. Brown sugar

  2. Pure cane sugar

  3. Turbinado sugar

I tend to use pure can sugar, but you can try different types to see what works best for your skin type.

There are also many different oils that you can use to make your own sugar scrubs: Below is a short list:

  1. Coconut Oil

  2. Hazelnut Oil

  3. Hemp Seed Oil

  4. Olive Oil

  5. Sweet Almond Oil

You can try different oils to see what works best for you! Moreover, since sugar scrubs do not contain water they do not require a preservative.

Now on to the recipe:

Ingredients:

1/4 cup of liquefied coconut oil (or your chosen oil)

1 cup granulated sugar (or your chosen sugar)

1 tsp vanilla extract (or your favorite essential oil)

1 finely chopped dried rose (or your favorite herbs)

Directions:

  1. Pure sugar into a glass container and add oil 1 tbsp at a time. The consistency should resemble sand.

  2. Add vanilla, finely chopped rose and stir.

Jen’s Jewel:

Sugar scrubs can be used at the end of showering, it is best to pat the skin dry, rub in circular motions and rinse well. Depending on the sugar type used (fine to coarse) you can use it 2-4 times a week. If you get epilation services done (sugaring, waxing and etc), exfoliating the skin is crucial in minimizing ingrown hairs. You want to exfoliate the skin regularly to remove dead skin cells and about 24-48 hours before you receive service to aid the wax in grabbing hair and not skin. You can find a good recipe for a sugar wax here.
